- Really article is a demonstrative adjective in modern English grammar it is kept under determiner
- वास्तव में Article संकेतवाचक विशेषण है आधुनिक अंग्रेजी व्याकरण में इसे determiner के अंतर्गत रखा गया है।
Definition of article
A word that comes before a noun and makes than either definite or indefinite is called an article.
वैसा शब्द जो किसी Noun के पहले आकर उसे या तो निश्चित या अनिश्चित बनाए उपपद(article) कहलाता है।
Ex- I saw a girl.(मैंने एक लड़की को देखा)
This is the girl who helped me in examination.
Note:- उपरोक्त प्रथम वाक्य में girl अर्थात noun के पहले article 'a' का प्रयोग किया गया है जो उसे निश्चित बनाता है लेकिन दूसरे वाक्य में girl अर्थात noun के पहले article 'the' का प्रयोग हुआ है जो उसे अनिश्चित बनाता है।
Kinds of Article
There are following two kinds of article according to function.
- Definite article
- Indefinite article
Definite article
A word that comes before a noun and makes them definite is called definite article.
वैसा शब्द जो किसी Noun के पहले आकर उसे निश्चित बनाने का काम करता है उसे definite article कहते हैं। जैसे-the
Indefinite article
A word that comes before a noun and makes them indefinite is called indefinite article.
वैसा शब्द जो किसी Noun के पहले आकर उसे अनिश्चित बनाने का काम करें उसे indefinite article कहते हैं। जैसे- a,an
Use of indefinite article
- article a/an is used before the singular countable noun. Ex-This is a pen. That is an umbrella.
- Article aaan must be used before the name of a profession. Ex-he is a doctor. she is an engineer.
- if Mr or Mrs is used just before the name of a person and we did not know anything about the person accept name article a/an is used just before the name. Ex- A mr Sharma is waiting for you.
- If a noun denotes rate, price etc article a/an is used before the noun. Ex-rice sales 20 rupees a kilo.
- if an exclamatory sentence is started with what article a/an is used just after what in a sentence. Ex-what a beautiful garden!
- if an exclamatory sentence is started with how article a/an is used just after how + adjective in a sentence. Ex-how beautiful a garden.
- If a verb is used as a noun in a sentence article a/an is used before the a verb. Ex-He is going for study.
No use of article 'a/an'
- Article a/an is not used before a proper noun. Ex- This is a Sita.(×)
- Article 'a/an' is not used before uncountable noun. Ex- This is a milk.(×)
